How We Test HFM

We explain exactly how our team tests HFM for Indian traders - from the RBI Alert List check to leverage, spreads, funding and tax reality.

Risk A CFD account can lose a large share of its balance in a short period.

We put HFM through the same checklist we would use on any broker before recommending it to a friend, and we check the regulatory side for India first. That means we look at who actually holds your money, what the RBI and SEBI say about platforms like this, and only then at spreads, platforms and payout speed. Nothing here is sponsored, and we do not soften a finding just because a broker is popular.

Step One: Who Regulates It

The first thing we verify is the legal entity behind your account, not the brand name. HFM is a multi-region group that grew out of HotForex, founded in 2010 and headquartered in Cyprus, and the group holds licences with FCA, CySEC, DFSA, FSCA, FSA, FSC and CMA-Kenya depending on the market. Licences do not travel.

Currency note
No INR

For India specifically, clients are onboarded under the offshore HF Markets (SV) Ltd entity in St Vincent and the Grenadines. There is no SEBI or RBI authorisation behind that entity. The RBI publishes an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms, and HFM appears on it. There is also an FCA clone-firm warning referencing HFM.

Under RBI and FEMA rules, Indian residents may trade INR-based currency pairs on SEBI-recognised exchanges such as NSE, BSE and MSE. Spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers are not permitted for residents.

Step Two: Reading the Leverage

HFM advertises leverage up to 1:2000 for this region. On an exchange-traded INR currency derivative, margins run roughly 3-5% under SEBI and exchange SPAN plus exposure rules, which works out to something like 20-30x on notional. The advertised number sits far outside anything Indian rules allow.

On a USD 100 deposit at 1:2000, you control a notional position of USD 200,000. A move of 0.5% against you is USD 1,000 - ten times your account.

Step Three: Costs and Account Types

HFM runs five account types - Cent, Zero, Pro, Premium and Islamic - with minimums starting from USD 0 to 5 depending on the type.

On the Zero account you pay raw spreads from 0.0 plus about USD 3 per lot per side. On Premium, spreads start from 1.4 pips with no commission.

The Forex Remittance Rule Most Beginners Miss

Funding an offshore forex or CFD account is not a permitted end-use under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The LRS cap itself is USD 250,000 per resident per financial year, tracked at PAN level, with 20% TCS on the portion above Rs 10 lakh a year. The margin trading purpose is the problem, not the ceiling.

HFM has no RBI-authorised local payment rails for this market. Deposits go through cards, wire or e-wallets, minimum around USD 5, and USD 100 for a bank wire. Everything settles in USD because there is no INR base currency option.

If you are comparing brokers for India, put the regulatory tier at the top of your list, not the bonus. A broker supervised by FCA, CySEC or ASIC, with segregated client funds and a long track record, is the benchmark worth measuring everything else against.

What We Could Not Verify

Promotions for India are not verified at review - bonus offers change constantly by region. Tax treatment depends on how you classify the activity: exchange-traded currency futures and options profits are generally treated as non-speculative business income taxed at your slab rate, while intraday speculative positions have their own loss set-off rules and shorter carry-forward. Residents must also declare worldwide income and foreign assets in Schedule FA, and crypto is taxed separately at a flat 30% plus 4% cess.

Where HFM Sits Next to Other Options

Every offshore platform serving Indian residents sits in the same regulatory position, so the differentiator is not "offshore or not" - it is how strong the group supervision is, how clean the costs are, and whether support actually answers.

HFM scores well on track record, instrument range, platform choice and low account minimums. It scores less well on the things that matter most for an Indian resident: no local licence, no INR base currency, no RBI-authorised rails, and leverage advertised well beyond local norms.

Questions

How do you actually test a broker like HFM?

We start with the legal entity, then leverage, then costs per lot, then funding and withdrawal mechanics, and finally the India-specific rules around FEMA and tax. Only after that do we look at platforms and instrument lists.

Does HFM appear on any Indian regulator's list?

Yes. It appears on the RBI Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms, and there is no SEBI or RBI authorisation behind the offshore entity that onboards Indian clients. The November 2025 version of the list ran to 95 entities and the RBI notes the list is not exhaustive.

Why do you mention leverage so early in a review?

Because a 1:2000 setting changes the outcome of an ordinary bad day. On a small deposit the notional exposure is enormous, so a modest adverse move can wipe out the account.

Can I fund an offshore CFD account from India legally?

Margin forex trading is not a permitted end-use under the LRS, so the answer is no for that purpose. Local INR rails like UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS work through RBI-authorised channels, but offshore brokers advertising UPI for spot forex operate outside that framework.

What should a beginner check first before any deposit?

Check the entity name and licence on the regulator's own site, confirm client fund segregation, read the total cost per round turn, and test support with a real question before funding.
